Mission San Jose - The local surface street, Mission Boulevard, snakes along the eastern foothills facing the San Francisco Bay, ending very near the site of Mission San Jose, circa 1797. Although the church was destroyed by the 1868 earthquake, the 'convento'(the adjacent building where residents lived) survived. In the 1980s the church was carefully, faithfully, reconstructed to appear as it did in the 1830s (two decades before California became a state).
